Project overview

Estee Lauder Companies is the world's second largest beauty manufacturing company with 30+ brands in their portfolio. They use SAP as their ERP system, so needles to say there is plethora of data in SAP.

KaleAnalytics was brought in to build manufacturing industry related KPIs and the challenge Estee Lauder was facing,

  1. There are about 400 tables within SAP Quality and Material Management and they didn't have the expertise in how all different tables relates to each other
  2. Lacking expertise in SAP backend data structure
  3. With limited knowledge available online for technical SAP help, they had to rely on costly SAP support engineer hours.

KaleAnalytics have professionals who specialize backend data structure for SAP supply chain modules like Quality Management (QM), Material Management (MM) and more.

Project execution

Our data professionals got to work and since we already knew what tables have batch, material master, inspection lots and more we were already equipped to hit the ground running.

  1. KPIs that we were building are Mass/Bulk Right First Time, Finished Goods Right First Time and Finished Goods Reject Rate, Quality Destruction and more.
  2. After documenting the business logic which will be used to calculate the KPI we got to work in making the data model and setting up a data pipeline.
  3. SAP ERP has the standard procedure defined but its also a very customizable tool and every business can customize it to fit their needs. Similarly Estee Lauder had some customized couple SAP T-Codes to fit their needs.
  4. At KaleAnalytics we have experience from front end to back end of QM, MM and supply chain modules, so even with custom transactions we were able to use those in the data model.

Project results

Couple weeks into the project we had a Tableau dashboard ready to show to our power users. Once we showed it to them they gave us feedback which we implemented and iterated it until the client was satisfied.

  1. In less than a month we had three industry standard KPIs up and going where the client could take actions on improving their KPIs. VP of manufacturing and other stakeholders started to measure their KPIs globally.
  2. Through the dashboard tool the client was able to see a consistent issue with one of their manufacturing lines and they invested in a program to improve the line.
